Yummy food alert (and a few other things!). I saw an article from Vogue the other day about the growing trend for vegan weddings – in fact it was named one of the most popular trends. However, it can be difficult pulling together a vegan wedding – or any wedding where there are a lot of dietary requirements. So I decided to pull together a blog on the subject featuring some fabulous vegan & vegetarian wedding suppliers with some practical advice along the way!
My vegetarian journey
I’ve been vegetarian since my teens (over 20 years – showing my age!) and remember how difficult it was even getting vegetarian dishes back then. I’ve got used to only having 1 or 2 choices on a menu and if I’m honest having more than 2 usually sends me into a tailspin as I simply can’t decide. In the last couple of years, the increasing number of veggies and vegans, has caused our supermarkets to react and its good to see more than just the one shelf of options in the refrigerated section. Now we tend to eat vegan about 2/3 times a week. However, when you scale up to a large event, like a wedding, it can be difficult to cater for both veggies, vegans and our meat/fish eating friends alike.
I’ve seen it several times – a beautiful large country house wedding venue with gorgeous food but the vegan & veggie option is like the poor cousin. A top of the range restaurant paying £££££ and the veggie course is bland and tasteless. Worse still you get a food truck (which shall remain nameless but this is a real example from a festival the other week) where the fries are cooked in the same cooking oil as the fish and meat. If we hadn’t have asked the question we would have been none the wiser. Aaarrggghhh!!!
Vegan & vegetarian weddings
Fortunately the wedding industry is starting to realise they need to cater for everyone and there are some great suppliers out there. However, it can be hard to find them & know they are going to deliver. Just google ‘vegan wedding supplier’ and the search results are sporadic.
So I’ve pulled together a list of some great suppliers who do fabulous vegan & vegetarian wedding food (and a few other bits). Most are based in the East Midlands but some are further afield – enjoy!
Ice cream (sundaes) and lots more
Emma from Soulvegan.co.uk comes first quite simply because she does the most amazing, vegan, unicorn ice cream sundaes. Yes! I’ll say it again – vegan, unicorn, ice cream sundaes. What a fabulous dessert option or have as your evening food alongside another one of your favourite foods?
Its bursting with fresh fruit, banana, raspberry, kiwi and blueberries – so as well as one of your 3 a day you also get sprinkles and a unicorn horn! (Sorry but I think I need to recover – I do have a thing for unicorns!).
As well as vegan ice cream, Emma also does a wide range of other vegan goodies including soya ‘Nibbly Nobbly’ lollies, chocolate brownies (I tried one the other day and it was awesome!), desserts (see our featured photo which is a raw lemon cheescake) and cakes. There are gluten free options too. Oh and just yesterday Emma shared with me her new vegan cake pops – perfect for favours.
I hear there is also a food truck on the way too so watch this space! Based out of Cheshire, Emma will cover nationwide for your celebrations.
Next up is the Vegan Food Pod. Run by Steph they do a range of options which are ideal for your evening wedding reception including delicious loaded falafel wraps and artisan doughnuts (including one with custard!) (all pictured below). They also do cinamon buns!
Now I’ve selected two awesome caterers for you whose menu’s caught my eye for both vegan and vegetarian. But, I’ve also popped a few ones to watch at the bottom as there was too many to choose from & all caterers have different styles! These are my own choices from personal experience as a vegetarian and recommendations from friends & colleagues. If you know of any others I should try out let me know!
Your catering company should provide you with a tasting session to try things in advance. These are a really great opportunity for you to refine your menu’s to exactly what you want.
First up, the Black Peppermint Food Company who recently catered at my friend Jenny’s wedding & came very highly recommended. Based in Lincolnshire, they specialise in delivering great food to match your style and will give you a bespoke tailored menu to match your requirements.
The dishes which caught my eye were ginger & chilli spiked melon, mac ‘n’ cheese balls (arancini style), sun blushed tomato kebabs with baby basil & roast butternut squash stuffed with wild mushroom risotto. On the dessert options, there was also a coconut & mango panacotta & vegan apple crumble.
Up next are Kemp & Kemp who are based in Stafford but cover nationwide. This team actively promise ‘no stuffed peppers, no nut roasts and not a quorn sausage in sight’! Inspired by Middle eastern, Mediterranen and Asian Cookery their menu’s certainly packs a punch.
What caught my eye? The chilled gazpacho (with very ripe tomatoes!), english asparagus with home-made hollandaise sauce, broad bean bruschetta & the goats cheese and onion tartlets.
And the ones to watch …..
– Limes Farm, based in Northamptonshire, is a family farm with its own farm shop and tea room. They catered at a garden party / BBQ for us last year and the food got so many compliments. The chef even taught us how to cook quinoa! (which has previously been my gooey nemesis!)
– I met Sam from Liberty Kitchen at a local networking event. Based in Nottingham, she specialises in vegan and coeliac (and any other dietary requirement) with her laid back and enjoyable feasts. She also uses the highest quality local and organic ingredients.
First up, based in Nottingham, is Celeste from The Organic Wedding Cake Company. Recently, certified organic by the Soil Association, there are a wide range of options including vegan, dairy free, eggless and gluten free. Celeste specialises in naked cakes, semi-naked cake, as well as, buttercream and chocolate ganache covered cakes. We’re spoilt for choice!
Next up is the Strawberry Cupcakes team based over on Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Jeanienne can create you a cake to meet your dietary requirements, including vegan, upon request. The cake pictured left is from one of our recent clients weddings. Whilst not vegan on this occasion, certainly had the wow factor.
Megan from Megan’s Vegan Pick ‘n’ Mix contacted me just a few months ago and I just loved her tag line ‘because vegans need sweets too’! So hire a candy cart (or make your own candy table) and get Megan to supply the jars & sweets – she has 26 different sweets to choose from. Because who can resist fizzy cola bottles and those little gummi bears! She even does favours too with personalised labels.
Other animal friendly suppliers
Lauren from Plaits & Pincurls is our favourite, award winning, animal friendly hairdresser. I’ve worked alongside Lauren a few times now on photoshoots and her title as the hair wizard is truly justified.
A fellow vegetarian, she goes the extra mile to use animal friendly products in the minefield of the hairdressing world. Its a difficult task but she’s found some fabulous products that are not tested on animals and are SLS, Sulphate and Parabens free (The Beever hair range being one of them which I actually use myself).
