How to choose your wedding hair accessories

Today’s guest post on wedding hair accessories, which is also part of our weekly ‘Sooty Says’ feature on Facebook, is by Amy (or Doll) from Dolls Mad Hattery. Amy , its over to you!

Where to start choosing your wedding hair accessories

You’ve got a Pinterest board with thousands of wedding pins saved, but when it comes to choosing the right wedding hair accessories, where do you start?

I often speak to brides at wedding fairs who have just started planning and they are absolutely sure they want a birdcage veil / hair vine / 1920’s style feathery flapper headpiece, but they haven’t chosen a venue or date or been dress shopping yet.

So, my first wedding hair accessories message to you is, don’t buy your accessory first!!

Start with your venue and date

Choose your venue and date. If you opt for a summer wedding in a formal stately home, this will set the tone for your day and something more traditional for dress and veil with headpiece may work best.

Similarly, if you opt for a destination wedding, whether it be a beach, Las Vegas chapel or chateaux in France, you need to consider how you will transport your headpiece and the temperature it’s likely to be on the day. You don’t want a wool felt cocktail hat in scorching sunshine, believe me!

As much as I’d love to think that an amazing headpiece I create could set the theme for the day, it is so much easier to design a headpiece around the dress and theme than to try to find a dress to exactly match the colour, crystals, beads, pearls etc. that you’ve fallen in love with for your hair. Then even if you find a dress that matches the headpiece, you may not love it on your body shape.

Wedding themes

Do you have a theme in mind?

Whether you’re going for a quirky theme like Dr Who, Steampunk or Alice in Wonderland or something more ‘English country garden’ with lots of vintage lace and muted pink and cream flowers, the theme can have a big impact on your wedding hair accessories. For example, you could tie in your wedding colour through the use of flowers, ribbons, fabric, lace, a vintage brooch or beading.

For a more alternative theme like steampunk or Alice in Wonderland, you could have a mini top hat, perhaps with a little birdcage veil.

I meet a lot of vintage loving brides, who want a headpiece with flowers and beading and a small blusher or birdcage veil. I always recommend having a detachable birdcage veil, so you can have it on for ceremony and photos, but remove it to party later. The ideal birdcage length is just under the tip of your nose so that it doesn’t catch on your eyelashes or get lipstick on the bottom!

Don’t forget your chosen hair style

Make sure you consider your chosen hair style when ordering your hair accessory. Discuss whether a clip/comb or headband would work best with your hairdresser.

Bespoke design services

I offer a bespoke design service, so once you’ve chosen your dress and theme, pop me a message via www,facebook.com/dollsmadhattery and we can discuss your headpiece ideas. I create one off pieces, using a mixture of vintage and new materials, so no other bride will have the same as you!
